সে রকমই বিষাদ বৃক্ষ উপন্যাসটি একটি ট্র্যাজেডি, একখানি শক্তিশালী এবং বিষাদময় আত্মস্মৃতি যা এই উপমহাদেশের এক ভয়াবহ সময়ের প্রতিবিম্বিত দর্পণমাত্র।এই গ্রন্থ সম্পর্কে রবীন্দ্রকুমার দাশগুপ্ত বলেছেন, "ভাগ্যাহত এই ভূ-খন্ডের হাসি-কান্না, আশা-নিরাশা, সুখঃদুঃখ এই গ্রন্থখানিকে এক অমূল্য সামাজিক দলিলের মর্যাদা দিয়েছে..."
স্মৃতিকাতরতা বড্ড গোলমেলে একটা জিনিস। মানুষ চাক আর না চাক, শৈশবের স্মৃতির বোঝা তাকে সারাজীবনই বয়ে বেড়াতে হয়। শেকড়ছাড়া মানুষ তাই বারে বারে সেই স্মৃতির কাছেই আশ্রয় খোঁজে। বিষাদবৃক্ষে যেমন মিহির সেন বার বারই ফিরে গেছেন পিছরার খালের সেই আধা-ইউটোপিয়ান, আধা পরাবাস্তব জগতে। দেশভাগের পর বরিশালের কেওড়া গ্রামের সেই খাল সাক্ষী কত বাঁকবদলের, কত হাসি-কান্না-আনন্দ-বেদনার। কখনো হিন্দু-মুসলমানের পারস্পরিক অবিশ্বাস, আবার কখনো তাদের প্রীতি, গভীর হৃদয়াবেগ সেই খাল দিয়ে বয়ে গেছে নির্লিপ্ত স্রোতের মতো। লেখক ছিলেন জমিদার বাড়ির ছেলে। সেই বড়বাড়ি অবশ্য কালের গর্ভে শ্রী হারিয়ে অনেক আগেই, লেখক শুধু দেখেছেন সেই প্রাসাদোপম দালানের একটু একটু করে চুন-সুরকির ক্ষয়। কিন্তু ধন না থাকলেও জাত্যাভিমান ছিল ষোলআনা, সেই হীনমন্যতার গুরুভার বয়ে নিয়ে বেড়াতে হয়েছে আকৈশোর। (Book Review: Good Reads)
Bishadbriksha by Mihir Sengupta is a popular Bengali Book which is written by Mihir Senguptaand another popular Memories Book of the author. Mihir Sengupta is an Indian writer of Bengali origin, best known for his 2005 autobiography Bishaad Brikkho (Tree of Sorrow). It describes the 1947 partition as seen by the author, who was uprooted from his native Barisal in present-day Bangladesh and ended up in Calcutta as a refugee. Bishaad Brikkho is regarded as an important literary document of the 1947 partition and won the Ananda Puroshkar literary prize.
