আরব জাতির ইতিহাস - ফিলিপ কুরী হিত্তি (এখানে দুইজনের অনুবাদ করা লিং আছে, ১। প্রিন্সিপাল ইব্রাহিম খা এবং ২। জয়ন্ত সিং, সেঁজুতি ভট্টাচার্য আর সৌমিত্র সেনগুপ্ত)। আরব আজ বিশ্ব-রাজনীতির এক বহুল আলোচ্য বিষয়। আরবের আয়তন ইউরোপের এক-চতুর্থাংশ বা আমেরিকার এক-তৃতীয়াংশ। কিন্তু আরব ও আরবীয় সম্পর্কে আমাদের জ্ঞানের তুলনায় অজানার অনুপাত বিস্ময়করভাবে বেশি। আরবদের ইতিহাস বলতে অধিকাংশ বাঙালির কাছে ৫৭০ খ্রীষ্টাব্দের পরের ইতিহাস। এখনও পূর্ণ ইতিহাস জানার পথ (৫৭০ এর আগের) অনেকটাই অজ্ঞতার কুয়াশায় ঢাকা।ফিলিপ কুরি হিত্তি যিনি অনেকটা একাই আমেরিকাতে ‘আরব ইতিহাস’-কে পরিচয় করিয়েছেন। তাঁর আরব ইতিহাসের বিখ্যাত বইয়ের ‘হিস্ট্রি অফ দা আরব’ এর বঙ্গানুবাদ ‘আরব জাতির ইতিহাস’। বিষয়বস্তু মোটামুটি প্রাক ঐতিহাসিক যুগ থেকে উনিশ শতকের ছয়/সাত দশক পর্যন্ত।বইটি থেকে দু’চারটি তথ্য থাকলো নিচে:আরব সম্পর্কে প্রথম অন্বেষণ শুরু করেন পণ্ডিত কার্সটেন নাইবুর। ১৭৬১ সালে ডেনমার্কের রাজার উদ্যোগে পাঠানো এক অভিযাত্রী দলের সদস্য ছিলেন তিনি। প্রাচীন ইউরোপের সব চেয়ে চেনা জায়গা ছিল দক্ষিনের আরবের আল্-ইয়ামান।১৮১২ সালে জোহান লুডউইগ বার্কহার্ড নামে সুইডেনের এক অধিবাসী শিক্ষিত সমাজের কাছে তুলে ধরেন পেত্রা-কে। ইবরাহীম ইব্ন-আবদুল্লাহ্ ছদ্মনামে তিনি মক্কা এবং মদীনায় যান। তাঁর বিবরণী সংস্কার করার মত তথ্য এ পর্যন্ত পাওয়া যায়নি।সম্প্রতি পাঠোদ্ধার হওয়া হিময়ারাইট লিপি এবং আধুনিক পর্যটনকারী ও অভিযাত্রীদের বিবরণী। প্রাচীন আরব সম্পর্কে জানার এগুলিই আমাদের মুখ্য উপকরণ।
