সময়টা ১৭৯৩ সাল। এদেশের মাটিতে পা রাখেন ডাঃ কেরী নামক এক পাদ্রী, লক্ষ্য তার তৎকালীন ভারতবর্ষে খৃষ্টধর্মের আলো ছড়িয়ে দেওয়া। আসার কদিনের মাথাই সে সহযোগী হিসেবে পেয়ে যায় এদেশী এক পন্ডিত ব্যক্তিকে নাম ‘বসুজা’। যাকে সে ডাকে 'মুন্সী' নামে। বসুজা একদিকে যেমন তার চাকরী রক্ষার খাতিরে নানা তাল করে যায় আবার অন্যদিকে নিজে খিরিস্তান ধর্ম গ্রহন করা থেকে কৌশলে বিরত থাকে ! ধর্ম প্রচারে এদিক সেদিক ঘোরাফেরা করতে করতে একদিন তাদের নৌকায় এসে হাজির হয় রেশমী নামক এক মেয়ে। উপন্যাসের এই মূল চরিত্রটি পালিয়ে আসে মৃত স্বামীর কারণে আগুনে পুড়ে মরার হাত থেকে বাঁচতে।
ডাঃ কেরী রেশমিকে বাঁচায় নিষ্ঠুর সতীদাহ প্রথার হাত থেকে। শুরু হয় ঘটনার নানা মোড়। অসাধারণ হিউমার আর নাটকীয়তায় ভরপুর পুরো উপন্যাস। মাঝেমধ্যেই আচমকা ঘটণার মোড় নিজের অজান্তেই চোখের পানি এনে দেয়। ওমা একটু পরেই আবার হাসানো শুরু করে।
