Writer Profile/Biography: Vikram Seth
Vikram Seth was born on June 20, 1950. His mother was Justice Leila Seth and his father was Mr. Prem Seth who was a shoe company executive. He is the oldest child among his siblings. He was educated in Doon School in Dehradun which is the elitist boarding school in the country where many eminent personalities received education. The Doon schooling culture imbibed in him a unique sense of English literary passion. According to 1965 Doon School report, Seth was an extraordinary pupil. A scholarship from Doon reallocated him to Tonbridge School, Kent, and yet another scholarship from Tonbridge moved him to Oxford.
Seth tried his hands at poetry at Oxford. He attended the Stanford University, California where he seriously learned poetry. He was deeply moved by Chinese poetry and learned Mandarin. Seth’s experiment with rhyme and meter culminated in his first poems collection Mappings in 1980. He visited China and came back to Stanford. His next poem compilation The Humble Administrator’s Garden was a composite of Indian, Chinese and Californian cultural reminiscences. His Golden Gate published in 1986 was a tribute to Alexander Pushkin’s literary sentimentality which won him Commonwealth Poetry Prize in the same year and accorded him public attention. The theme of Golden Gate is inherently resonant and sombre where he presented a reshuffling of human values and their effects. His earlier poems were narration of personal emotions relating to disconnection, solitude and nostalgia.
Seth’s Beastly Tales and A Suitable Boy are enjoyable collection of fables dealing with social and humanitarian issues. They seem to be up-to-date and sardonic with different shades of life. A Suitable Boy was inspired by Jane Austen’s work and written in the Indian context where a widow began to explore a bridegroom for her daughter.
Seth’s realization and knowledge as an artist got reflected in his Equal Music where he beautifully pondered on western classical music.
