Writer Profile/Biography: Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay
Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay is one of the central pillars of modern Bengali literature. He wrote more than fifty novels and hundred short stories. Tarashankar was born in a rich Bengali Brahmin Zamindar class family in the rural town of Labhpur, Birbhum on August 23, 1838. Although he belonged to a landowning class and the highest caste, he was not inherently a “subaltern” writer despite many of writings mentioned subaltern references. Tarashankar became influenced by the radical ideology of Non Cooperation movement during 1920s when he was a student of St Xavier’s College. As a result, he suffered a brief imprisonment and failed to complete his education. Later on he dedicated his life as a village activist in his home town. His deep experience of the rural texture life enriched his literary acumen. His unique rural orientation was quite contrary to Rabindranath’s Shantiniketan culture that presented an illustrative, maudlin, fantastic depiction of village life.
Tarashankar’s writing career rests on a strong pedestal as a novelist of three classic novels namely Dhatridebata (1939), Ganadebata (1943) and Panchagram (1945). The novels recounted the friction in the social fabric and economic structure during the colonial rule and the gradual decline of the old order. In short succession, he wrote outstanding novels like Kabi, Hansulibanker Upakatha, Kalindi, and Nagini Kanyar Kahini. These works realistically dealt with the tales of certain marginal sections of society like palanquin bearers, snake charmers or a village rhymer and especially Santhals. His other well-known novels include Arogya Niketan, Saptapadi, Radha, Manjari Opera, and Aranya Bahni.
Tarashankar is one of the superior writers of the twentieth century. He was deeply associated with the semi-arid red-soil locale and his writing brings to life the variegated rural underclass. He was awarded with Rabindra Puroshkar, the Sahitya Akademi Award and Jnanpith. He was bestowed upon with D.Littt from Calcutta University and was elected President of Bangiya Sahitya Parishad.
