Writer Profile/Biography: Saradindu Bandyopadhyay
Saradindu Bandyopadhyay was born on March 30, 1899 in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. He tried his hands at creative writing with his debut collection of poems while he was a student of Vidyasagar College. At that time he dwelt in a mess on Harrison Road which was the role model of Byomkesh Bakshi’s earlier quarters. He got married while he was still a student in 1918 to Parul. He pursued law and took writing completely. When he first introduced Byomkesh Bakshi to the audience in 1932 he had already become a recognized writer.
Saradindu started writing screenplays for Bombay talkies as well as other production houses from 1938. However he quit his film-based career in 1952 and got settled in Pune because he wanted to restart his first love which was writing. He concentrated on his writing wholeheartedly and produced some wonderful creations like Baroda who was a ghost specialist besides profusely generating historical romances, short stories, plays, belles-lettres and children’s fiction. Yet, Byomkesh surpassed all his other contemporaneous rivals because of his immense popularity. Saradindu’s detective fiction is immortal because of his inimitable writing style and sophisticated character portrayals. Although Saradindu was influenced by Conan Doyle, Chesterton and Christie in the sketching of Byomkesh, his characterization and locale was set in Indian context. Byomkesh and Ajit both truly represent pre-Independence middle-class Bengali educated youth. Byomkesh identifies himself as a Satyanweshi or Truth seeker which literally signifies his intellectual quest or moral pursuit of truth.
Saradindu received Rabindra Purashkar in 1967 for his historical novel Tungabhadrar Tirey. He was also conferred upon with Sarat Smriti Purashkar by the Calcutta University. He spent the remaining of his life in Pune till he breathed his last September 22, 1970.
His short stories include Jatiswar, Kartar Kirti, Mone Mone etc. His historical novels are Kaaler Mandira, Kumarsambhaber Kabi, Gaur Mallar, and Tumi Sandhyar Megh. Are you interested to read.  View or Read More Books  of Saradindu Bandyopadhyay
