Writer Profile/Biography: Samaresh Bose
Samaresh Bose was born on December 11, 1924 in Bikrampur of erstwhile Bangladesh. He received little formal education. His childhood years were spent in Naihati. He came to Calcutta at the age of thirteen and worked hard to earn a living. He worked as an egg seller and did every sort of menial job in return for meagre wages. He worked in an ordnance factory for a few years in Ichhapore. He used to live in slums for quite a long time.
Samaresh came closely associated with Satya Dasgupta who was a member of the Communist Party of India. Samaresh joined the party under his guidance. His adventurism and disillusionment with conventionalism ideologically motivated him to turn to leftism. His self-realization and class-consciousness played an essential part to rediscover his writing identity.
Samaresh wrote his first story Adaab in 1945 when he was only twenty two. His first novel Nayanpurer Mati was written in the design room of the rifle factory. Samaresh was arrested when Communist Party was banned in 1949. He wrote Uttaranga while he was serving sentence in jail. Samaresh had to abandon his cherished political beliefs as a result of internal doctrinal transformation. His literary effusions marked this phase with a series of novels like BT Roader Dhare, Ganga and Bhagini. His writing personality was triggered off by the inquisitiveness to understand human beings and also to unearth the inner truth.
His writing arena covers the industrial suburbs of Kolkata and revolves round political activism. During 1970s he wrote novels like Prajapati, Bibar, and Patak which centralized on the issue of moral deterioration. He wrote major novels like Amritakumbher Sandhane, Nirjan Saikate and Kothai Pabo Tare with the nom de plume Kalkut where he remained as an impartial spectator to a fair, a group or a community. His other noteworthy works include Tridhara, Ayananta, and Dekhi Nai Phire. He received Sahitya Akademi Award for his analysis of Puranic myth Shamba. He passed away on March 12, 1988.
