Writer Profile/Biography: Premendra Mitra
Premendra Mitra was born in Varanasi in the year 1904. His mother died when he was a child and hence he grew up in the custody of his grandparents. After the death of his grandfather, he came to Calcutta to live with his relatives. He joined South Suburban School and passed Matriculation in first division. He attended Scottish Church College. He led a team of active literary lovers. Mitra decided to learn agriculture from Tagore’s friend Leonard Elmhirst and so he relinquished his studies and arrived in Shantiniketan. Soon he deserted his agricultural interest and entered into an undergraduate course. Even that did not preoccupy him or long. He joined Ashutosh College and became Professor Dinesh Chandra Sen’s research assistant.
Mitra married Bina Devi at Giridih and soon family responsibilities forced him to change and search jobs frequently. He took the jobs of a teacher, a salesman of pharmaceuticals, advertisement personnel, newspaper columnist, films script writer and editor.
Premendra Mitra’s approach to literary composing was basically metropolitan. The middle class stratum struggling with daily problems was his subject of writing. His stories revolved around socio-economic problems that determined their destiny. Mitra was a gifted story teller and short stories gave vent to express his narrative genius centering a major crisis. His poems are particularly noted for wit, sarcasm and reflecting social tensions. His science fictions like Piprey Puran and Mangalbairi are brilliant and characteristic of scientific temperament. His famous character Ghanada is a self-educated man who spun adventures instinctively. Another fictional character was Bhoot Shikari Mejokarta.
Premendra Mitra loved detailing and his composition is effective of creating a dramatic impact. Mitra’s style in selection of descriptive sentences was spectacular which marks a distinctive phase of Bengali culture.
Premendra Mitra’s poems are Prothoma, Samrat, Feraari Fouj, and Khuda Wahid. His short stories are Ponchoshor, Benami Bandar, and Putul O Protima etc. He died in 1988.
