Writer Profile/Biography: Narayan Gangopadhyay
Narayan Gangopadhyay was born on February 8, 1918 in Baliagingi, Dinajpur in North Bengal. Although his original name was Taraknath Gangopadhyay, he is better known by his nickname because he preferred and used the latter to avoid confusedly being identified with another writer of the same name. He completed his B.A. from Brajamohan College in Barishal. He ranked first in first class in M.A. in Bengali. He served as a professor in Anandachandra College in Jalpaiguri. Thereafter he joined City College, Calcutta. He became the Reader in Calcutta University in 1967. He received his Ph.D. degree for his research on Sahitye chhotogolpo. He is an iconic figure and is remembered as an inspiring teacher.
His literary ambition was stirred by the political cataclysm of his time and he blended his patriotism and romance with his sense of political consciousness to apply to his fictional portrayal. Communist literature and dynamism deeply inspired his creative thinking. Yet such leftist overtone could not affect his natural romantic or fine lyrical outbursts.
Gangopadhyay’s epic novel Upanibesh is contextualized in Sunderbans where Portugese, Arakanese, Mogs and middle-class bourgeois fought for the possession of the dune. His three novels, Samrat o sreshthi, Mahananda and Lalmati express his attraction for the declining traditional culture of a tribe or a community. His noteworthy novels Mandramukhar and Swarnasita are woven round political disturbances.
Gangopadhyay’s real magic was in his authority on the narration of short stories. His Top, Itihas, Har, Tas, Lakshmir Pa, and Hariner Rang shine brilliantly in the treasure-trove of Bengali short stories. His contribution to children’s literature is enriched with the stories of Tenida.
The latter part of his life was devoted to journal writing. His analytical compositions bear the marks of his investigative acumen and novel ideas. These include Bangla Galpobichitra, Chhotogolper simarekha, Kathakobir Rabindranath, and Sahitye chhotogolpo. Narayan Gangopadhyay died at a rather premature age of 52.
