Writer Profile/Biography:Sunil Gangopadhyay
The well-known author Sunil Gangopadhyay was born on September 7, 1934 in Faridpur now situated in Bangladesh. His family got relocated in Kolkata after partition in 1947. The family was confronted with acute poverty and Sunil was desperately in search of some job, although he was in his teens. Despite the obstacles, Sunil continued his education and gained his Master’s degree in Bengali from Calcutta University in 1954.During the days of his struggle in Kolkata, he became more and more inclined towards poetry and he himself later admitted that poetry was his first love. He pioneered the poetry movement along with his comrades and founded the little magazine Krittibas in 1953. He developed his flair at writing fictions from 1966 and very soon became an acknowledged writer in fiction. His prose style was extremely easy going and that doubled his popularity. He became the most prolific writer shining with equal brilliance in short stories, travelogues, essays, children’s fiction and novels. He is perhaps the most versatile writer of contemporary Bengali literature. Some of his novels have been adapted to films. Pratitwandi and Aranyer Dinratri were featured by Satyajit Ray. Pratitwandi won the national award.
Sunil Gangopadhyay was essentially a poet. He started his literary career as a poet. His celebrated poetry collections are Eka ebang Kayekjan (1958), Amar Swpna (1972), Bandi Jege Achhi (1974) and Ami ki Rakam Bhabe Benche Achhi (1975). His first fiction novel was Atma Prakash published in 1966 which represented the disappointed and disillusioned Calcutta youth. His experimentation with fiction was a success and this contributed a pedestal to his popularity in literary career. Some of his novels like Sei Samay (1982) which earned him Sahitya Akademi Award and Purba Paschim (1989) are considered as masterpieces.
The writer breathed his last breath on October 23, 2012 in Kolkata following a massive cardiac arrest. He will be ever remembered for his perceptive, enthusiastic and excellent artistry in Bengali literature.
