Samaresh Majumdar was born on 10th March 1942. his childhood years were spent in the tea gardens of Duars. He obtained his elementary education in Jalpaiguri District School. He received his graduation degree in Bengali from Scottish Church College, Kolkata and his Masters degree from Calcutta University respectively. He was professionally involved with the principal publishing corporation called Ananda Bazar Prakashana.
Samaresh Majumdar nursed a deep affection for Group Theatre. In fact his first story Antaratma was meant t be adapted to a dramatized version. Thus he started off his literary journey as a playwright. The story was ultimately published in Bengali magazine named Desh in the year 1967. He wrote his first novel named Dour which was published in Desh in 1976. Samaresh tried his hands at different genre of creative writing of short stories, travelogues, and children’s fiction with equal excellence and genius.
Samaresh Majumdar penned down a variety of novels with different coloring and characterization. Some of his worth-mentioning and memorable novels include Sharanagoto, Saat Kahon I and II, Tero Parbon, Swapner Bazar, Ujaan Ganga, Tirtha Jatri, Victoriar Bagaan, Aat Kuthuri Noy Darwaja, Attiyoswajan, Anuraag, Cinemawallah, Derdin, Ekmukhi Rudraksha, Garbhodharini and Ekadosh Aswarohi.
Samaresh Majumdar has been accredited with numerous rewards from State Government as well as private organizations for his literary achievements. He was given prestigious awards like Ananda Puroshkar in 1982, Sahitya Akademi Award for his masterpiece Kalbela in 1984, Bonkim Puroshkar for his novel Kolkataye Nabakumar in 2009 and IIMS award in 2009. Besides, he was given the award for script writing in 1982 on behalf of BFJA, Dishari and Chalochchitra Prasar Samity. Two f his televised novels that gained outmost popularity were Tero Parbon and Kolkata.
