Shirshendu
Mukhopadhyay was born on November 2, 1935 in the Mymensingh district of
erstwhile Bangladesh. His father was a Railway employee and had often
to transfer posting. Hence the family had to move to different places
and this enlarged and variegated Shirshendu’s compilation of childhood
experiences and memories. Those childhood reflections have frequently
appeared in his various writings. He got through Intermediate from the
Victoria College and completed his Masters in Bengali from Calcutta
University.
His writing journey began with the publication of a short story in the reputed Bengali magazine Desh in 1959. The same year his novel Ghunpoka got issued in the annual Puja edition of Desh. Although he began his livelihood as a school teacher, his affection and zeal for literature drew out the writer from him. He also became associated with Ananda Bazar Patrika.
Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay is one of the most accomplished writers of modern Bengali literature. His writing bears the signs of brainpower, compassion and vivacity and an exact reproduction of events with respect to time and place while remaining somewhat disconnected of the repercussion of its course at the same time. He picked up his pen to depict the stormy period of 1960s with his debut novel Ghunpoka. The characterization and introspective outlook of the writer simply charmed the readers. This was followed by a series of other critically acclaimed books like Pherighat, Kagojer Bou, Manabjamin, Paraapar, and Chakra. Apart from over 50 adult fictions, Mukhopadhyay wrote about 25 fictions and science fiction books for children. His children books show an emphasis on love and human values over violence and hatred. His popular children fictions include Manojder Adbhut Bari, Patalghar, Nrisingha Rahasya, Chhayamoy and Goshai Baganer Bhoot.
Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay was honoured with Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Manabjamin in 1989. He was conferred Ananda Puroshkar twice. He also received Vidyasagar Award in 1985 for his contribution to children’s literature.
