Writer's Biograpy/Profile: Bani Basu
Bani Basu was born on March 11, 1939 in Kolkata. She is a prolific author versatile in writing in various genres of creative writing. She enrolled in Scottish Church College and graduated from Calcutta University. She is a post-graduate in English Literature. She is also a teacher, a critic and a poet. Bani Basu is a powerful voice in contemporary Bengali literature.
Bani Basu’s literary genius ranges a whole volume of seventeen novel s and six books in addition to an impressive collection of short stories which speak volumes for her distinctive narrative style and themes. Her works comprise a vast array of real as well as surreal imagery which are vivid of her razor-sharp analytical ability, humanitarian outlook and emotional depth.
Right from the ensuing of her career in 1970s, Bani Basu attracted the attention of critics rather than common readers. She began her writing vocation with the publication of Janmabhoomi Matribhoomi. Many of her writings have been printed in renowned Bengali magazine Desh. Her characteristic use of dialogue, portraying of events in the backdrop of concrete situations and deep understanding of history and sociology rightfully deserve to be ranked among the notable literary creations of modern Bengali literature.
Many of her novels have been translated into English. Her novels Antarghat won her the Tarashankar Award; Maitraye Jatak won her the Ananda Purashkar. S e is also accredited with a number of translation projects of Somerset Maugham, D H Lawrence and Sri Aurobindo into Bangla. She is also the recipient of Sushila Devi Birla Award Sahitya Setu Purashkar. She retired as a lecturer at Krishna Girls’ College in Howrah. She was bestowed upon with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award 2010. Her memorable boos include Timira bidira, All Ladies Brahman, Meyeli Addar Halchal, Gandharbi, Operation Orindom, Ponchom Purush, and Surupa Sorupa.
