Writer Profile/Biograppy: Buddhadeb Basu
The celebrated author, poet Buddhadeb Basu was born in Comilla in Bangladesh on 30th November in the year 1908. His parents were Bhudev Chandra Basu and Benoy Kumari. He was an intellectual as well as a versatile novelist and playwright. He was admitted in Dhaka Collegiate School. Buddhadeb completed his matriculation in 1925. He studied in Dhaka University and passed with flying colors. He migrated to Calcutta in 1931. He was a professor and taught English and comparative literature at Ripon College and Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He was a noted critic and editor. He is regarded as one of the major poets who revolutionized the poetic course of modern times. He delivered lectures on Indian literature in numerous universities around the world. He became associated with the poetic lineup Kallol that led the literary movement of the 1930s.
Buddhadeb left a signature style in all forms of his literary expression. He devoted his early years of literary career to writing poetry and his second poem compilation named Bandir Bandana was a commemoration of youthful, zealous creativity that earned him critical acclaim. His other poetic masterpieces like Kankabati, Damayanti, Draupadir Shari, Je Andhar Alor Adhik, and Swagata Biday are symbolic of existential investigation and experimented with language and form being inspired by Western imagery styles. He also launched and edited the poetry magazine Kabita that influenced contemporary Bengali poetry.
Buddhadeb’s originality was inherent in his exceptional style statement of impressionistic entirety that was manifest in his principal novels such as Sara, Jedin Phutlo Kamal, Dhushar Godhuli, Maner Mato Meye, Lalmegh, Tithidor, Moulinath, Nilanjaner Khata, Rat Bhore Brishti, and Golap Keno Kalo. The characters of these novels are distinctively lonesome and estranged peculiar of artists and are critical of the stupidity and unworthiness of institutions of religion or marriage.
