Writer Profile/Biography: Leela Majumdar
Lila Majumdar was born on February 26, 1908 in the famous Ray Chaudhuri family of Calcutta. Her mother’s name was Surama Devi and her father’s name was Pramada Ranjan Ray. Pramada Ranjan was the younger brother of Upendrakishore Raychaudhuri who was the famous children’s writer and father of yet another literary genius Sukumar Ray. Upendrakishore first published the celebrated “Sandesh” magazine which attained the widest renown under the editorship of Satyajit Ray. Lila Majumdar was actively engaged with the publication of Sandesh till 1990s.
Lila Majumdar spent her early childhood years in Shillong and received her elementary education in the British hill station of Shillong. Later, her family moved to Kolkata and Lila was admitted in a school where she stood second among girls in class X in the year 1924. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Calcutta University. She completed her graduation and post-graduation ranking first each time. Lila Majumdar took teaching as her career first in Darjeeling and then in Shantiniketan on a special invitation from the institutional head.
Lila Majumdar wrote her first story at the age of 14 which got printed in Sandesh by Sukumar Ray. Her first book Baidyanather Bori was a children’s book that got published in 1939. Her second book Din Dupurey made her a notable writer overnight. Her creative and prolific pen touched upon nearly all interesting subjects ranging from cooker, translation, poems, short stories, novellas to children’s section. Her book Holde Pakhir Palok won the President’s Award for children’s book in 1960. Two more illustrious volumes named Podipishir Bormi-Baksho in 1953 and Goopyr Gupto Khata in 1957 were issued chronologically. She received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1963 for a hilarious play Bok Badh Pala and Rabindra Puroshkar in 1968 for her life history Aar Kono Khane. She died on April 5, 2007 in Kolkata at the age of 99.
